EP 301 – MITOCHONDRIAL MYOPATHY

December 9, 2022 by Rianne Chavez

Mitochondria, a membrane-enclosed cellular organelles producing energy, 3D illustration

A client has pain, tension, and a specific referral pattern between her right shoulder and left leg. She was also born with a rare disease that affects her mitochondria, and that carries a host of complications, like high blood pressure, headaches, and diabetes.

Can massage therapy help reduce her tension, even if it is led by mitochondrial dysfunction? We ask that question and discuss on this episode of “I Have a Client Who . . .”

Want to Win a Hand-painted Silk Scarf?

November 30, 2022 by Rianne Chavez

The holiday season just snuck right up on us, didn’t it? And with it, the opportunity to
consider conscious and conscientious charitable giving.

It is important to me to make gifts to organizations that align with my values. The
massage-related non-profits closest to my heart are the Massage Therapy Foundation
(MTF)
and Healwell.

I served on the Board of Trustees of the Massage Therapy Foundation, I was the
President from 2010-2014, and I continue to volunteer in various ways for them. The
MTF taught me the importance of research literacy—a skill I use every single day.
And Healwell is a movement, as much as it is an organization—they bring skilled
massage therapy to medically complicated patients, by setting up relationships with
hospitals, and by educating massage therapists—not just in the art of hospital-based
massage, but in all kinds of ways: from increasing our awareness of inherent biases, to
being more comfortable with the dying process, to increasing our skills in information
literacy.

Healwell and the MTF recently got together for an Interdisciplinary podcast, to discuss
what the MTF is up to these days. It was inspiring and exciting, and it renewed my
love for both Healwell and the MTF—I am proud to be a monthly donor to both. And I
have a way to share that enthusiasm with you.

So here’s the deal: I invite you to become a monthly donor to either Healwell, or the
MTF, or both. The official rules say that for a promotion like this, no donation can be
required, and I am a rule-follower. So how much you commit is up to you and your
karma—the drawing will be blinded and random. Technically it can be for $0/month. I
hope you’ll consider at least $5/month or more. Do this by January 1, 2023, and let
me know about it, and you will be entered in a drawing for a custom-made hand-
painted silk scarf.*

Pretty sweet, right?

Imagine one of these for you or someone you love:

Octopus
Painted Elephants
Salt Effect
Dragonflies
Seals in Kelp
light blue scarf stretched while being painted with orange California poppies
California Poppies

So do me a solid: support the MTF, or Healwell, or both— and let me paint a scarf for you!

Once you make your monthly commitment, upload a digital receipt or screenshot of your confirmation here to be entered to win.

November 4, 2022 by Rianne Chavez

An 82-year-old client lives with bladder cancer. After cataract surgery, he developed a urinary tract infection (UTI) and sepsis and had to spend 10 days in the hospital. Now he’s home, on IV antibiotics, and wants a massage.
